Sonata for Trombone "Prowler"

Program Note:

When approached by Dr. Strauch with the possibility of writing a new work for trombone and piano, I started sketching the same day. This one-movement sonata for trombone is a work that explores the dark, the cold, and the uncanny. I took much inspiration from Scriabin’s fourth piano sonata for the structure and tone of the piece, even though his is a sonata in two movements. This work loosely follows a sonata-allegro form, however, after the cadenza, the themes aren’t restated in the home key. Instead, like Scriabin’s fourth piano sonata, the piece ends with a full restatement of only the opening theme in its entirety. This piece is dedicated to Dr. Strauch because of his immeasurable influence and impact on my musical life and education at Whitworth University.
