Program Note:
When asked to write a trumpet duet for performers Julia Maher and Matthew Thornell, I enthusiastically took on the challenge and got to work immediately. Writing a piece for two single-voice instruments presented a challenge, which only increased my determination to write it. This piece centers around the concept of an echo, the second trumpet representing the echo of the first trumpet, itself representing a protagonist, in a deep canyon. The length of time between the voice and the echo varies throughout the piece, representing different aural landscapes.
